With just five years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, accelerating progress on family planning (FP2030) and maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) commitments is more urgent than ever. Recognizing the need for sustained accountability and coordinated action, Samasha recently conducted Motion Tracker Approach refresher trainings in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Kenya to equip partners with the tools necessary to track progress and drive collective action.
What is the Motion Tracker Approach?
The MTA is a civil society-led approach for strengthening accountability and driving action at every step
of the process from commitment formation to achievement. It uses purposeful and sustained
stakeholder engagement to ensure a universal understanding of commitments, coordinate stakeholder
actions, foster partner participation across multiple sectors, track progress on commitments and raise
public awareness. In each country, a local CSO serves as the convener and is responsible for leading the
implementation of the MTA, while continuously building and strengthening the coalition of government
and civil society stakeholders.
Building Capacity for Action
These refresher workshops brought together civil society organizations (CSOs), policymakers, health
advocates, and technical partners to:
- To introduce and describe the Motion Tracker Approach
- Share experiences and lessons learned in using the Motion Tracker Approach
- To build capacity of local convener to be able to create a neutral space for local actors’ participation and engagement in commitment tracking for FP2030 and MNH
Urgency for 2030 Goals
As the global community races toward SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), ensuring universal access to
family planning, reducing maternal and child mortality, and strengthening health systems remains
paramount. The workshops emphasized the critical role of accountability, data-driven advocacy, and
strategic partnerships in closing existing gaps and driving impactful change.
What’s Next?
Armed with refreshed skills and a reinforced commitment to action, partners in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and
Kenya are set to have a clear understanding of FP and MNCH accountability using the Motion
Tracker Approach. As Samasha continues to provide technical assistance, we remain committed to
ensuring that commitments translate into tangible health outcomes for women, children, and
communities.
